Biography
Kayleigh has
one older brother who also races, his name is Brian. Her
parents Kevin and Laurie Perkins have been involved with the
local unlimited race for 40 years. So both Brian and
Kayleigh grew up around hydroplanes. Brian always wanted to
race and got really involved at a young age, Kayleigh didn’t
as much. She loved dancing and being around boats but not
being involved with the mechanics of them. Kevin bought
Brian a 1 liter mod. And he raced it and set a world record
in that boat. Kayleigh was a crew member at age 13. she was
starting to have an urge to drive as the years passed. Brian
asked her if she wanted to and she said yes.
So at
16 Kayleigh took out a 2.5 stock hydroplane. That year she
did not get that much seat time in competitive racing. But
the following year Kayleigh had a boat to drive, it was
another 2.5 stock that could also run as a 1 liter mod. She
taken 2nd
in a few races and got better at her starts. The following
year she was driving a better 2.5 stock. This boat she had
her first win in. she also won the ULHRA 4-cylinder
championship. At age 18 she started driving her families 1
liters again. Her and her brother Brian didn't get to race
each other much do to boat failures. She did very well that
yea but knew she wanted to get into a bigger boat.
At the end of
her 3rd year of racing she got to test the UL-72
Miss Boat Electric. Kayleigh went out and out qualified the
existing driver. That off season, Joe Frauenheim who is one
of the owners of the UL-72 asked Kayleigh to be a co-driver
with Patrick Howorth. She went to the First race and won her
first heat. And took 2nd and 3rd in
the following heats. Placing 3rd in the final.
Kayleigh left the first race being the points leader. That
year she won one final heat at
Silverdale, Washington. That year the Miss Boat
Electric team won the 2007 championship.
